Can You Kazoo?

Hands up if your Munchkin hates to make noise. No hands? Didn't think so.
Nothing screams kids like ... well ... kids! One of my daughters favourite things to do is play with their many percussion instruments, guitars and keyboards (yes, keyboardS as in plural; portable, on a stand with a mic and even one of those giant ones you walk on!) and when those aren't sufficient they improvise. Usually all over the furniture.
Enter kazoos. Easy to make, easy to play and lots of fun into the bargain!
All you need is a toilet paper roll, wax paper or baking paper, a rubber band, and bits and bobs to decorate with.

Cut a square out of the paper large enough to cover the open end of the cardboard roll.
Attach the paper with the rubber band. Make sure the paper is stretched as taut as you can make it, and the rubber band is as tight as possible.
Decorate, and you're all done!

To play it, put the open end of the cardboard roll against your mouth, and hum into it. It will thrum and alter the sound of your humming. Experiment with making different sounds into it: dooo, daaa, rrrrr, hemmm. Does it sound different if your lips are around the cylinder, instead of inside? What happens if you place your hand flat against the paper-covered end of the kazoo?

Maybe you could make a few for all the members of your household and have a kazoo band!

Thanks for reading, have fun! ~ L.

  1. Awesome! This is actually a great way for kids with speech delays to practice lip closure, too! We're going to have to try it.
