Moon Sand - Attempt #1

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, our first batch of Moon Sand did not quite turn out as intended. Nevertheless, it was still loads of fun to play with , so I ended up renaming our particular version 'Moon Crumble' (because, as my mum pointed out, it felt more like apple crumble than wet sand). Moon Sand is, of course, meant to feel like wet sand, but it is much more user friendly for those of us who live an hour or so from the beach (like moi!) or those of us who don't otherwise have easy access to sand.

The 'recipe' is this:
Mix 7 cups of plain flour with 1 cup of vegetable/baby oil.
That's it.

I thought seven (seven!) cups sounded ridiculous, so I halved the quantities. I wish I hadn't. We certainly had enough to play with, but more would've been better. Seven cups next time!
It seemed too dry, so I added another 1/4 cup of oil, and that's how we arrived at the crumbly texture. I also added some green sequins and glitter to the mix to pretty it up a bit.

Eden enjoyed mixing it up...

Until her hands got dirty...

For some reason, she's happy to get grubby outside - but not indoors! So outside it was...

Nan got her hands dirty too. Eden was very busy baking us cakes and making cups of tea...

She was so happily absorbed in her play, that I was able to take tonnes of pics without her wanting to see them every other second ("I want to look, Mummy?")!
Fellow Aussies, this is a great idea for summer outdoor play, especially if you can't hit the beach as often as your kids would like. If you're in the middle of winter, why not create a Beach Day indoors for your tot, and pretend that you've gone on a trip to the beach? Make some sand, turn up the heater, get into your togs (Aussie slang for bathers/swimwear) and have some fun. Maybe even do it in your bathroom (for easy clean up) and use your bathtub as a pool!
Thanks for reading! ~ L.

  2. We made this last week and it was sooo much fun. it would have been even funner outside. I think I'd just have let them have at it. Unfortunately the flour does get all over if you don't be careful.
